San Onofre Nude Beach - June 2010

Four citations have been issued as of June 1, 2010 for being nude at San Onofre State Beach. As of this writing the Orange County district attorney has not made a decision as to whether or not to prosecute the individuals cited for being nude. A court ruling by the California Supreme court now allows the California Department of Parks and Recreation to enforce a no nudity regulation. Though the court battle focused on San Onofre State Beach, where there has been a nude beach for over 30 years, law enforcement officers of the department can now issue citations for nudity in any unit of the state park system. Users of Black's Beach in San Diego now have to wonder if their nude beach will be the next to fall.

Background: In March, 2010 state law enforcement personnel began issuing citations to people who were nude on the far south end of San Onofre State Beach. To reach this section of beach, one must drive 3.5 miles through the park to the parking lot for Trail 6. Then, one must walk about 1/2 mile down a dirt path to the beach, and another couple hundred yards to the section of the beach that has been unofficially nude for almost 30 years. Following the California Supreme Court decision in the fall of 2009, lifeguards and park rangers who are offended by seeing a naked person on the beach can issue a citation to that person.

The Southern California Naturist Association intends to continue to challenge this "no nudist" policy in the courts. You can help defend the right of people to be nude at designated beaches by donating to the Naturist Action Committee.

Keep in mind that this is about designating certain beaches and areas as "clothing optional" or for "nude use." Anybody who is offended by the nude human body need not go to one of these areas. The officials of the California Department of Parks and Recreation said that families were offended by the nudity they saw at San Onofre. As I stated above, one could not accidently stumble upon the nude section of San Onofre. If the officials were concerned about someone being offended, a sign could have been posted  warning people that they may encounter nude people beyond the sign. As for "indecent activity," more patrols of the area would solve that problem.

Report on Santa Barbara nude beaches - July 2009

I had an excellent trip to Santa Barbara. I'm happy to report that nudity is still very common at both More Mesa and Gaviota. I was at More Mesa for 3 days. Visitors still need to park on Puente Road and walk west on Mockingbird Lane to the undeveloped More Mesa Meadow. After walking down the path to the beach, the nude area is to the north. Nude use south of the path is discouraged because an informal agreement between the Friends of More Mesa and the Hope Ranch Homeowners Association.

Overall, the beach is in excellent shape. There are several driftwood shelters that people have built that make excellent nude sunning areas. There was a good size crowd each day- probably around 50-100 people- and everybody nude. As expected, there was a wide variety of naturists- several couples (both heterosexual and gay), lots of single, some groups, and some families. The only slight downside is the occasional lurker peeping at the nudes from the top of the cliff. But in general, More Mesa still gets 5 stars! Highly recommended.

I also spent 3 days at Gaviota Beach. The nude portion is south of Gaviota State Park and can be accessed via two parking areas. The first area is just south of the Mariposa Reina interchange and is a small dirt lot on the side of southbound 101. The second parking area is also along the southbound 101 but a bit further south. After parking here, one crosses the railroad tracks and takes the short trail to the beach. The nude area is to the north. Gaviota doesn't normally get as many visitors as More Mesa, but its also a very nice beach. There were probably an average of 50 people there each day, most of them nude. The gays tend to congregate at the very northern end, while everyone else tends to remain further south. Gaviota also gets 5 stars! The only future uncertainty is whether the recent court decision that would allow State parks to issue citations for nudity will affect nude use at Gaviota. The NAC lawyers have just filed a Petetion to Review the appelate court decision, so I'm speculating nude use will continue at both Gaviota, Blacks Beach, and San Onofre for the immediate future.
